Hung Parliament... shit. So we're still waiting for the outcome from that, an interesting time in politics. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a LibLab coalition, although that's not looking very likely right now, especially since the Tories do still have the most seats, if not an outright majority :/
And now for something completely different, by which I mean my squee post for this week's Ashes to Ashes and Doctor Who. As ever thar will be spoilers! Click at ye own risk! ...I don't know why I'm typing like a pirate, yarrr! Ok, I'll stop now *g*
Wow, so, ok, another especially intense episode this week. I am very ambivalent about the forthcoming last two parter episode. On the one hand I want to see it so much to see how everything will turn out, on the other it's the last one ever, which is just sad! :(
So firstly I was still saddened about Viv dying, even though I knew there was going to be a main character death in this episode, and it was very likely going to be him. I love Gene's speech at the end about how Viv was a hero, and all past mistakes should be forgotten. Which is true.
But OMFG how extra creepy was Keats when he was approaching the dying Viv, while whistling that damn song?! That scene seriously creeped me out, more than anything else has on this show. The cold and distant look in his eyes as he looked down at Viv, as if he were doing nothing more than watching a bug crawling across the floor. Then doing the same sort of thing as he did to that undercover police woman by seemingly sending Viv on his way with Viv trying to fight against it. CREEPY!!!
It's been noted that both Viv and the undercover woman - whose name escapes me right now - were traitors to the police before they died, and Keats got to both of them as they were dying before Gene did, and seemed to do something to them. The comparrison has been made that Gene is who sends deserving coppers to Heaven (Sam?) and Keats is who sends bad ones to Hell. An interesting theory.
Also, ok, the obvious thing to comment on is how the writers of this show know how to seriously mind fuck the audience. What the hell was up that that guy claiming he was Sam? With so much conviction in his voice. A serious what-the-actual-fuck? moment! I have NO idea where they're going will all this, but I am psyched to find out... even if I don't like the eventual answer!

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with Doctor Who this week. A much better episode than the previous few have been. I have been one of the few fans, it seems, who was still currently fairly unimpressed with the new series. However, I think VoV had changed that. I really hope it's not just because Toby Whithouse wrote it this week, and so next week I will be right back to feeling "meh" about it. Although, I have to say next week's looks and sounds great.
My one gripe about this episode was the fully alien version of the "vampires." I'm not a big fan of entirely CGI aliens as they were, they always look too fake. The humanoid versions looked great, but the alien versions... well I'm back to "meh" again. I always think good old fasioned makeup looks better and more realistic (the Racnoss, Chantho, the Vinvocci, ect) although I am aware that sometimes that's not feasible with the amount of time it must take to do that.
Other than that small bit of snark I thought this episode was great! It had a more light hearted tone, and some great humourous moments which helped. The Doctor jumping out the cake and then telling Rory that Amy had kissed him was classic! Rory was pretty great all around, better than I was expecting. I look forward to seeing more of him.
I also liked the balance of character involvement in this episode. The Doctor, Amy, and even Rory all get a chance to shine and take a part in saving Venice. The baddies were awesome, and I liked the way the various "vampire" traits (no reflection, fans, hates sunlight, ect) all got explained in a sciencey way.
Of course it had to have the angsty bits. Isabella dying was sad, and unexpected, for me anyway. Then her father sacrificing himself... alright, not so unexpected, but still sad. The guilt trip over another species dying, and Rory's "you make people want to impress you" comment to the Doctor.
But I really enjoyed that episode (unsurprising really as I love Being Human too). It had nearly everything I could want to make an awesome episode! As I say though, I really hope this isn't a temporary thing. I remember feeling this way about the first episode, and then being very disappointed with the following ones. Ah well, we shall see what next week brings!
So... yeah, a very squee-worthy week! :D
