Wow, just... wow! I figured I should get this Doctor Who series 5 finale squee post done now while everything is fresh in my mind, and as I am the saddo that is home alone on a Saturday evening with no better to do! So turn away now if you don't want spoilers and mad ramblings!

Firstly, who says Moffat can't writer character based stories? I know a lot of people make the most common comparison to RTD's writing and Moffat's writing saying that RTD is a better writer for character involved plots, and Moffat is better for plotty episodes. Also, the wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff, which was well done in this episode too.

But again my I reiterate my earlier "wow" with slightly more emphasis. WOW!!! The one thing I did find hard with RTD's finales is they were so OTT. There was often so much going on in them with all the companions, enemies, twists, ect, and moving at such a pace that sometimes it just felt overwhelming and actually took away from the excitement. It doesn't feel necessary to have all that going on just because it's a finale.

And this year Moffat proved that to be true! I've said it before, but I'll say it again, I was so sceptical when I read about the 2 final episodes, having pretty much every main alien species in it. But Moffat pulled it off so well. This episode was actually a rather slow paced one compared to RTD's finales. There were a lot of slow moving, but wonderful character scenes. (Also, it managed to keep an element of humour, despite everything going on, rather than the angst overload that RTD finales had).

Alright... so Moffat did have every one of the three main characters either die, or lead the audience to believe they they were dead.... but even still it wasn't angst overload.

Also, on a related angst note, this is the first NuWho series so far that hasn't had a sad ending of some sort:
Series 1: The Doctor regenerates.
Series 2: Rose gets trapped in Pete's World.
Series 3: The Master dies (well it was sad for me!) and Martha leaves.
Series 4: Donna is mind-wiped.
End of series 4 specials: The Doctor regenerates.
Series 5: EVERYTHING IS FINE AND THE DOCTOR PLUS COMPANIONS (RORY IS ALIVE AGAIN... PROPERLY THIS TIME) GO OFF TOGETHER ON A NEW ADVENTURE!!!

I am so glad it seems to be both Amy AND Rory staying on for the next series, when I thought it would just be Amy. I mean, don't get me wrong, I do like Amy. However, I much prefer the Doctor, Amy, and Rory combination. It just gives it more spark.

The moments between those three in this episode was amazing and touching. But especially the Doctor talking to young Amelia just before he had to go into the crack and disappear was so well done, and so emotionally perfect. And even though we all knew he wasn't going to disappear for good it still sent a shiver down my spine when he was talking.

Also, yeah, I'll admit River didn't drive me as crazy in this one as she usually does. Except for that damn irritating "spoilers" catchphrase of hers. Also this infuriating "you will find out soon" (infuriating mostly because it means she will be back again) and not saying whether she is the Doctor's wife or not, which is getting old now.

I don't want to end on a downer though, and so will repeat how awesome this episode was overall. I was laughing, crying, and on the edge of my seat at some points. And in the end the three amigos go off in the TARDIS on their next adventure together. A perfect ending. Roll on Christmas!

I have also just noticed that I am criminally lacking in Eleven, Amy and Rory related icons. I need more icon space! Ah well, I at least have one of Eleven on his own. I am now off to download and play the Cyberman episode of the BBC's Doctor Who game (I just finished the Dalek episode last night). Hey, I gotta do something to tide me over until the Christmas episode!

~ Ace.

P.S. I am going to Cardiff on Tuesday as a slightly late birthday treat (well, only a day late). I will be off to see Ianto's shrine again and visit the Doctor Who exhibit again. There have been more things added to the exhibit since I last went that I want to see. A perfect time to go while I am still hyped up on Doctor Who squee! :D
