manicsfan: (Merlin - Merlin and Arthur epic bromance)
[personal profile] manicsfan
Although I love Merlin I can never think of enough to say on each individual episode to do a review for them each week, but after yesterday's episode I really felt the need to write a few words. So instead I'm just going to give a few quick paragraphs on my thoughts of the new series so far. Also there will be a tad bit of character bashing of a certain character, so if you love all the Merlin characters you might want to avoid this! You have been warned!

Firstly, to get the character bashing over with, I must be one of the few people in the fandom who has actually never liked Lancelot. I was glad when he died, disappointed to see him back last night, but relieved to see he was killed again and it wasn't some fake death cop out (and hopefully he'll stay dead this time). Sorry to Lancelot fans though, since it can be tough to lose a character you love, and if you do like him you might want to skip the next paragraph.

Lancelot always seemed far too Mary Sueish (or Marty Steve as I think a male version is called) for my liking. Same goes for Gwaine. He comes in, is perfect at swordfighting, with a tragic past, and is unable to become a knight because he's not noble blood. He saves all the main characters at one point or another thoughout the series. He even has the cliched love interest thing with a main character (ovbiously neither of the main characters, because they're both male, and the I don't think the Beeb would go down that route, but with the most prominent female character).

Moving on, I really hope Gwen doesn't stay banished for good. Which, incidentally, was a dick move by Arthur, even if he didn't know that Gwen was influenced by magic. I'm guessing she will come back sooner or later, otherwise that would pretty much fuck over all the Arthurian legends that have Arthur marry Guinevere. There are already very few prominent female characters in this, and to lose another is a disappointment.

I'm also getting a little tired of all the Morgana and Agravaine stuff. I was sad when they decided to make Morgana a baddie, I always liked her, and liked the chemistry she had with Gwen. However, while I do think they make interesting baddies at times (although sometimes I really want to punch them, especially Agravaine, like when they framed and kidnapped Gaius) it can get a little dull and repetitive to have them as the antagonists nearly every week.

So yes, that's about all I have to say for now. To sum up; please bring Gwen back soon, please don't bring Lancelot back again ever, and let's have some different baddies sometime! There's actually not much to say about the main characters, Merlin and Arthur, things have all been pretty much the same with them. Apart from Arthur becoming king after Uther died, but we all knew that would be happening sooner or later.
