manicsfan: (Dr. Who - Ten with sonic screwdriver)
As I suspected, it was rather pointless having the first 45 minutes of Waters of Mars at all. A rather predictable plot that has now been completely over shadowed by the Doctor's behaviour in the last 15 minutes. Which is all anyone is talking about now, and is the main thing that interests me about the episode. The thing that both love and hate about the episode.

After having watching the episode for a second time, I am in kind of ambivalent with how the Doctor behaved. It was actually so unexpected and unpredictable, unlike the first 45 mintues. We all knew the Doctor would go back and save Adelaide's team (or what was left of it), despite the whole fixed point deal. But how he did it was just totally shocking, and certainly not something I was expecting, despite having glimpses of this side of the Doctor before. Which I do give kudos to the episode for.

I had read spoilery stuff about a fortnight before this aired about how the Doctor was going to be saying and doing some rather OOC stuff. Which I assumed to mean about him telling Adelaide that she was going to die and he can't/wont help them, ect. Which in reality is not OOC for the Doctor to do that when he has to. Then I thought they had meant him changing his mind, which was just too predictable... Then came what they really meant!

I have never really been keen on the idea of "evil" (for lack of a better word) Doctor. As a huge Doctor/Master shipper I have seen a fair few fics that involve the Doctor going evil like the Master, one way or another, and joining up with him. But always skipped them because I never really liked the idea. It tends to spoil the whole thing I like about the Doctor/Master dynamic.

I understand now that Adelaide's suicide wasn't just about preserving the time lines, but also as a way to giving the finger to the Doctor. The Doctor who was saying he could do anything he wanted, and there was no-one to stop him. It was her way of saying "well you can't stop me from dying." Adelaide was indeed a brilliant character.

Now, a lot of people are speculating about how Ten will regenerate. After that episode a lot of speculation has suddenly turned to the possibility of the Time Lords coming back (through the purposeful actions of the new "I can do anything" Doctor?) and punishing him by forcing a regeneration, as was done to Two in The War Games.

Speculation has been around for over a year now that when RTD leave the writer's desk that his last episode would entail the resurrection of the Time Lords. Some people have also speculated that 10.5 might turn into the Valeyard (although I am less inclined to believe that bit).

So, will we be seeing scary, arrogant Ten forced to regenerate in the last episode? I'm not sure. But I am both excited and nervous to find out.
