Dr. Who and Red Dwarf (cut for spoilers)

So, today was the day that I (and all other sci-fi fans) have been looking forward to. New Doctor Who and more new Red Dwarf. The First Doctor Who of the year (gotta wait until November for the next!), and the first Red Dwarf for 10 years!
I will cut this for spoilers. So please be warned that below the cut is spoilers for both Doctor Who Planet of the Dead, and the first 2 parts of Red Dwarf Back to Earth. First a Red Dwarf review, and then Doctor Who.
Well... I guess I'll start off with the bad, to get it over with:
Red Dwarf: The first episode I actually enjoyed, it wasn't great, but not terrible either, which I feared it might be. I have to say I was glad there was no Kochanski, b/c I never liked her. Also it had a lot of unexplained things. It didn't seem to follow on from the events of series 8. Sadly there was no Holly (male or female), and it never explained how there could be two holograms on Red Dwarf when it was only supposed to be able to sustain one.
The fact that it wasn't filmed in front of an audience, like all the old ones were, is kinda jarring too. As I say, it was sorta half and half for me, I was looking forward to the next episode (the one today) in the hope that it bumped up my enjoyment, and maybe explained some of those things I was having issues with...
Oh how I wrong I was, about the enjoyment factor anyway. I cannot believe they broke the fourth wall. Who the hell thought that THAT would be a good idea?! I totally hated it. I got a few laughs, but was so put out by the plot. Yes they they explained some things about what happened in between the 8th series and this one, but I was so put out by the epic fourth wall breakage that I just didn't care about that at all.
I will probably still watch the third episode tomorrow, but considering it seems like it's going to be a crossover with Coronation Street I can't see myself liking it at all. Things like this work for zany comedies like The League of Gentlemen, but not for Red Dwarf IMO.

So... now we'll move on to the more positive:
Doctor Who: As you've probably guessed by my calling it "the more positive" I really liked The Planet of it the Dead. It was a light hearted and fun episode (which RTD said it would be, before all the seriousness of the end of the series and before Ten's death *sobs* and regeneration into Eleven gets going.
I was surprised that the Tritovores weren't the enemy, because I was expecting them to be. Of course there was that very intriguing and ominous message that Carmen gave the Doctor about a man who will knock four times, I can't wait to see what that is about. Most people seem to be assuming it's a sign the Master will be coming back, with the "knock four times" indicating the drum beat that the Master had. I do hope so, I would LOVE to see the Master back once more before Ten regenrates.
Also I have to say I loved the character Malcolm, played by the always brilliant Lee Evans, very funny, would like to see more of him in the future, don't know if we will though. I'm not sure what I make of Christina, she seemed pretty cool for that episode, not sure how she would have been as a proper companion though. I suppose we wont know unless they being her back sometime in Matt Smith's episodes.
The preview for the next episode Waters of Mars also looks pretty damn interesting. Roll on November!
Stay Beautiful,
Aissa.
